Watsu™ (Freeing the Body in Water) is a form of aquatic therapy that incorporates the stretches of Shiatsu and massage while utilizing the properties and buoyancy of warm water.
How does Watsu™ Work?
During a Watsu™ session, the client is held and supported while being floated, moved, and gently stretched in body temp water. Combining this with massage, breathing and movement, Watsu™ provides an ideal method to help relax, expand and re-pattern body and mind together. Watsu™ promotes neuromuscular re-education using gentle mobilization of joint and soft tissue.
Breaking the Pain Cycle
Watsu™ provides a way to interrupt the pain cycle. The therapeutic float position releases the weight from the spine. The warmth of the water with the nurturing experience during a Watsu™ session allows relaxation, body awareness, and releases muscle tension. The gentle stretches along the pressure points and massage may increase range of motion and blood circulation.
Ai Chi & Personal Aquatic Fitness
Clients may also learn basic Ai Chi water exercise using a combination of deep breathing and slow, broad movements of arms, legs and torso in flowing patterns. Progression to a personal aquatic fitness program is available including stretching, strengthening and aerobics.
Who provides Watsu™?
Kay Richmond, M.S.R.T.C., Aquatic Therapist, Aquatic Instructor and Watsu™ Practitioner has 30 years of experience in Aquatic Therapy helping people with chronic pain, neurologic and orthopedic concerns. Kay has spent her life in the water and has experienced first hand the healing properties of water.
